How to install Adobe Reader 9 on Windows 7 beta

If Adobe Reader 9 doesn't want to install on Windows 7 beta for you - it didn't install on my ASUS R2H UMPC, but then it did on my Shuttle XPC desktop - and you only get the self extract part of the install and then it simply disappears, you can try extracting the package contents yourself by running the following from a command line:

AdbeRdr90_en_US.exe -nos_ne

that will extract the installation files in "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Setup Files". If you want to install both AIR and Reader 9, run the main setup.exe, otherwise for just the Reader run the Reader9\setup.exe. Follow the instructions to finish the installation and you can remove the setup files when you're done (~113 MB).

Tip: If you are the occasional PDF reader like me you probably don’t see any benefit from having the Adobe Reader Speed Launcher run at logon. I would suggest removing / disabling the start-up entry with AutoRuns. I haven’t noticed any slowness at application start-up without it, even on my tiny R2H UMPC.

Update 18 March 2009: You should try the Adobe Reader 9.1 out now - just installed it on Windows 7 build 7057 with no need for the workaround, I assume Adobe fixed the issue rather than MS having anything to do with it.

  1. Thank you for posting the solution. I just finished a Live Chat session with Adobe download support, and they had no clue as to why it was failing.

Perhaps my "sandbox" was polluted, but I needed to remove the Reader 9.0 tree (rmdir /s "Reader 9.0"), reextract the files, and it then worked beautifully.

  2. I'm glad it helped Skip - ha, I beat an Adobe support person at googling, that feels nice :-) odd is that i found the solution on their website, it was for version 8 enterprise though...

  3. Just for the record, running setup.exe in the top level directory hangs, which is what I was seeing with the "click on the exe" install. The install for just the reader software works fine.

I use Firefox, and am not yet able to open PDF docs in Firefox 3.0.5. This didn't work for either the 8.1.3 or 9.0 versions. I can, however, choose to open them with Acrobat Reader.

If you go in Firefox > Options > Applications (tab) > Adobe Acroba Document, does it say Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)?

Then Tools > Add-ons > Plugins (tabs) > Adobe Acrobat plugin, is it enabled?

  9. Where can I download the files? Using my current internet connection and the R2H it mentions there is a problem on the website and I'm not able to download.

  10. Hey Rudi,

Try the link below, choose Windows Vista and your prefer language and choose Continue then Download.

I don't use their download manager, but you are also presented with the direct link, here is the one for English US.

  12. Yes the tiny URL link worked. What I noticed as well is that there was no problem installing it out of the box. Just running the setup.

  13. It didn't work for me on R2H, worked on a different box, both with W7, I don't know what was the difference, maybe the spaces in user name in the first case was causing it to fail?! i dunno...

  14. Above didn't work for me, but Adobe now has a version for Windows 7 on their main download page that I just installed on W7 RC x86 and it works good. No errors in Firefox, and I can read them within the browser.

  15. Oh, thanks for that, I see they've added Windows 7 in the drop-down but it's pretty much the same file as for the other versions of Windows (http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.1/enu/AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe).

What they did is they fixed version 9.1 to work install properly on Windows 7 (I don't think it changed since March update the bottom of the post).

Not a Firefox user myself, but I take it there used to be problem :-) thanks for letting others know.

PS: If you have the time or desire, where can I find a driver for my Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4100C?

  17. Thanks PickieChickie, I'm sure Reader 9.1 would install just fine, no need for the manual workaround.

Maybe you can try this, I guess it depends on how technical you are or how bad you want your scanner to work on W7, good luck :-)

  19. @Sid Les
Thanks Sid, thought I might give something back - I'm surprised the issue is still there, I thought it was fixed a while ago in some 9.x version...

  20. I was unable to uninstall Adobe Reader 8.0 from my system. While doing so, I get an error message "Could not access network location %APPDATA%". Again while installing Adobe Reader 9.3 for Windows 7, while installation, I get the same message. Any clues what is causing it? Is there any other software which can be used for pdf files besides acrobat reader!!

  21. See if this helps you fix the problem.

You could try re-installing / repairing Adobe Reader 8 first and then uninstall it and install the newer one.

Try Foxit Reader, I'm sure there other PDF viewers out there but I'd say Adobe's might be best...
